The History

The Mother Myth of Route 66 Mural was painted in 2013 by the Mural Mice, a Flagstaff-based artist collective. The mural tells the story of Route 66 decade by decade, from the 1920s through the present.

But the more significant story at this stop is the Flagstaff All-Indian Pow Wow. Starting in the 1930s and running for fifty years, it was held on Route 66 during Fourth of July celebrations. At its peak, it drew over 100,000 people.

The Route 66 Story

Route 66 ran through Indigenous land. The Pow Wow is a reminder that the road's history is not just about cars, neon, and westward migration. Why Native American communities chose America's Independence Day to celebrate their own cultural traditions, on the Mother Road, in plain sight, is one of the most powerful stories on the tour.
