The History

In the early days of automobile travel, there were no motels. Travelers either stayed at expensive hotels or camped by the side of the road. Auto camps emerged in the 1920s as a middle ground: affordable, organized camping areas with basic amenities.

The B&M Auto Camp sat on the 1926 alignment of Route 66 through Flagstaff. For a small fee, travelers could pitch a tent, use a communal bathroom, and cook at a shared fire pit. It was simple, but it was revolutionary.

The Route 66 Story

The story of Route 66 is, in many ways, the story of who gets to travel. Auto camps democratized the open road. What replaced them, and why, tells you everything about how America's relationship with travel changed in a single generation.
